Volunteering at a ride - how can I help?
Offer to volunteer and make a Ride Organisers day!
It takes an army of helpers to ensure an Endurance ride goes ahead efficiently. WAERA depends on volunteers (members and non-members) to donate their time at a ride. There are many jobs that you can offer to help with, here are just a few:
Pencillers - (No experience needed) Log vetting details for the TPR's & vets into the log books/day cards.
Runners - (No experience needed) To relay logbooks/day cards & information from the vetting area to the ride desk. (usually done by riders kids!)
Checkpoints - (No experience needed) Generally 2 people per checkpoint. Checkpoints relay horse and rider information via radio/mobile phone back to the base station together with providing water for humans and horses. You will be out on track early morning until the afternoon, when the last rider has gone through your checkpoint. No experience needed as you will be escorted to the CP location and given all equipment that you need. Lunch is usually provided for you as you are volunteering all day.
Base Station Comms - (No experience needed) Person who operates the base station radio and communicates with checkpoints to convey rider information as they pass through checkpoints.
TPR Stewards - Accredited persons attending horses prior to vetting - to take temperature and heart rate (refer to TPR Steward page on our website waera.au for how to become accredited) - courses are usually held at the the Easter Marathon.
Rescue Float - A ride cannot commence without this volunteer. Provision of horse float, towing vehicle and driver, to retrieve injured or withdrawn horses/riders from the course. You would be provided with a map or be escorted by persons who know the track.
Ride Desk - (No experience needed) Generally 2 people responsible for taking entry paperwork, issuing number bibs to riders and weighing 80km riders pre ride. You would be placed with an experienced person to guide you through the process.
Start/Finish Desk (Time keepers) - (No experience needed) 2 people responsible for accurate recording of times for each horse over the start/finish line. All equipment is provided. You would be placed with an experienced person to guide you through the process.
Computer Operator - All riders/horses details and ride information are entered into the WAERA computer during the ride. This is uploaded to the national database where all results can be found. If you are interested in learning the computer, we can arrange for you to be mentored. Please contact the Secretary waerasecretary@gmail.com if you are interested.
Course Demarking - (No experience required) Requires 2 people, one to drive and one to remove the course markers after the ride has finished.
Please contact the Ride Organiser of a particular ride if you want to help.
